RICHMOND Va. JUL 20 1861 circular datestamp (Powell type 1a) with matching PAID 5Cts. (type F) on tiny commercially made envelope to Mr. A.G.  Powell, Smithfield Johnson Co. N.C. with original letter signed P.V. Rogers regarding a teaching position and appropriate compensation for different subjects taught. If in agreement, he would be willing to start August 1. Late use of this postmark. Top back flap missing. Ex Harry Muldrow. $150.

Ashley Guy Powell (1812-1889) was a planter, turpentine producer, inventor of agricultural implements, furniture maker, and educator. He and his wife, Elizabeth Stevens Powell, operated a private academy, Hillfield, beside their home and boarded students there as well.
