Bonham's Light Dragoons was also known as Company G and Lipscomb's Troop. It consisted of men primarily from Newberry, Abbeville, and Laurens counties in South Carolina. Hampton's Legion: The company was one of the four original cavalry companies that formed the cavalry battalion of Hampton's Legion. The legion was a combined arms force of infantry, cavalry, and artillery, organized and funded by wealthy planter Wade Hampton III. The cavalry battalion, including Bonham's Dragoons, served with the legion for roughly its first year. However, the legion's various battalions often operated separately.

Reorganization: 2nd South Carolina Cavalry: In August 1862, the Hampton Legion cavalry battalion was expanded and reorganized into the 2nd South Carolina Cavalry regiment. The original four companies were joined by new companies, and the unit was placed under the command of Matthew C. Butler. The cavalry battalion, including Bonham's Dragoons, served with the legion for roughly its first year. However, the legion's various battalions often operated separately.
