Capt. (later Col.) J.A.R. Hanks was an Assistant Quarter Master who served in Macon and Atlanta, Georgia. Early in the war, he also commanded troops at Camp McDonald, a major instruction camp in Georgia. Records link him to the 23rd Battalion of Georgia Cavalry, which later merged into the 4th Georgia Cavalry. In October 1865, Col. Hanks partnered to launch and edit The Cherokee Georgian, a staunchly Democratic anti-Reconstruction newspaper, but only managed it for two years before selling it to Coolidge and Harben in September 1867. He was a devout Missionary Baptist and served as pastor of the First Baptist Church at Dalton, Ga.
