Lieut. Joseph J. Hoyle, a school teacher, enlisted at age 24 in Company F, 55th NC Infantry (State Troops) on 5/30/1862. He was promoted Sergt. 11/25/1862 and commissioned 1st Lt. 3/11/1863. He was wounded at Globe Tavern, Va., AKA Second Battle of Weldon Railroad during the Siege of Petersburg, 8/18/1864 and died of his wounds at a Richmond hospital 9/1/1864.

Cooper who was Speaker of the Alabama House of Representatives in 1867. More research needed. Cedar Bluff, AL, and Centre, AL, are about 6 miles apart. A lovely fresh college cover. $1,000.

James Petigru Boyce (1827-1888) was an intellectually gifted Southern Baptist pastor, theologian, author, and educator who was a chaplain for a Confederate regiment of volunteers from Greenville Hayden & Whilden were importers of British jewelry and silverware. Central Warehouse Company: Robert Hagood was in business with Clement White. These two, along with Edward T. Watts and John W. Lapsley, incorporated the Central Warehouse Company in Selma in February 1860.

Renowned for its opulence and grace, the Charleston Hotel was an iconic symbol of the city’s antebellum glory until demolished to put a motor lodge in its place in 1959 - I have no words. U.S. 26, 3¢ dull red (tiny UR corner perf fault) tied neat ALEXANDRIA VA APR 17 1861 double-circle datestamp on the FIRST DAY OF VIRGINIA INDEPENDENCE cover with spectacular blue advertising cover of Green’s Mansion House on verso, addressed to Miss Mary F. Kagey, New Market, Shenandoah Co. Virginia. Virginia was only independent for a few short weeks before she joined the Confederacy May 7, 1861. This cover will be featured in my column in the September 2023 issue of the American Stamp Collector & Dealer. $3,000. Listed in both Independent-2 and Advertising

Green’s Mansion House was converted to a Union hospital during the Civil War. Alexandria was captured very early on May 24, 1861, and remained in the Union the remainder of the war. It was the largest hotel in Alexandria; in early November 1861, Green received notice stating he had three days to vacate. On December 1, 1861, Mansion House Hospital was opened as a General Hospital. Parts of nearby buildings were also used as part of the hospital. The facility could hold up to 700 patients, sick and wounded soldiers. In 2016, PBS broadcast a miniseries, Mercy Street, set in the hospital in 1862. Baroness Mary Phinney von Olnhausen (1818–1902) was an American nurse, abolitionist, and diarist who served as a nurse there. She also served as a nurse in the Franco-Prussian War for which she was awarded a Cross of Merit for Women and Girls in 1873 by Kaiser Wilhelm I (similar to an Iron Cross). It was torn down in 1973 due to deterioration and to reveal an unobstructed view of the historic Carlyle House. Mary F. Kagey (1832-1911) had a brother, David Franklin Kagey (1834-1923), who served as a hospital steward with the 25^th Virginia Infantry. Their wartime correspondence is archived at the Library of Virginia.

Mills & Co., New York City, with scarce large showy blue illustrated Planters' Hotel, Augusta, Ga. advertisement on back flaps; Very Fine, Confederate Use of U.S. Postage. The small double-line Augusta postmark was used starting late in 1860, which reliably dates this cover to 1861; 2008 CSA certificate. $500.

Gaudy Mars Bluff, S.C., with original business enclosure; small central cover tear at top. The firm of Cobia & Co. owned the blockade runner Gem that was active August 1863 to March 1865 and was 2 for 2 in successful trips. $275.

LITTLE ROCK ARK MAR 20 1862 double-circle datestamp neatly struck with manuscript “Due 5” on green all-over Cole & Dyer advertising cover for Foreign & Domestic Liquors, Tobacco, Cigars, Etc. from Memphis, Tenn.; soldier’s cover with mandated endorsement of “Wm. W. Jacobs Private Captin (sic) Robersons Co” and addressed to Mrs. Sarah M. Jacobs, Dewitt Arkansas. William W. Jacobs was a private in Company E of Arkansas 18th Infantry.
