Columbus Section

Baltimore Section
8108

Baltimore Section and Columbus Section of Ten Cent De La Rue Altered plate – proof of each on opposite sides of paper. The altered plates, the 2¢ and the 10¢, were shipped through the blockade to Richmond. De La Rue did not print any stamps from these plates. When the plates arrived in the Confederacy, they were never used by the Confederacy. The subsequent history is speculation. One theory is that they were were captured by the North during battle. Supposedly, a federal soldier took the 10¢ altered plate and cut it into sections to give as Rebel souvenirs to friends. According to August Dietz. Frank Baptist - who printed the 5-cent stamps for Archer & Daly in 1863 - positively identified the plates. He superintended the souvenir printings of the Altered Plate. The "Columbus Section" was so called because it was moved to the Ohio State Museum in Columbus. Through the years, there have been many printings from various sections of the original plate. The Columbus Section is one of the most well known and common, the Baltimore section much more scarce. You will immediately note the differences in the two sections / sides - see the "notches" at left on the Columbus section. CCV $125. $125.

CSA 6-U-1a, Ward Private Printings 5¢ blue PANE OF 100, (AKA Philadelphia Printings) made from the 5¢ De La Rue printing plate carried on the blockade runner Bermuda. The plate never reached the Confederacy, as it was captured by the U.S.S. Mercedita and became a prize of war. The plate was acquired by the Franklin Institute, Philadelphia in March 1954 from which prints were privately made on the order of Philip H. Ward, Jr. The Franklin Institute sold it to the Smithsonian National Postal Museum in April 2011 and is currently on display in the William H. Gross Gallery. Printings were also made in black but the blue is the more desirable one. It can be extremely deceptive to collectors unfamiliar with it. They were printed in sheets of 400 and then cut to panes of 100 as original sheets were for the Confederacy. They are ungummed. CSA Catalog Value $150 for the pane. The width is a bit wide for the scanner bed so side margins may appear smaller than actual. $150.

CSA 6, 5¢ light blue London print PANE OF 100 (stamps were typographed in sheets of 400, cut into panes of 100 and shipped by blockade runner from England to the Confederacy). This is the upper right pane. Full original gum, never hinged on verso – trace of two hinge marks in top front margin, very minimal gum creases – far less than usual. A pristine, lovely pane. CSA Catalog Value $2,400 just as singles. Rare and desirable. $1,900.

CSA 6, 5¢ light blue London print, single PANE OF 100 (stamps were typographed in sheets of 400, cut into panes of 100 and shipped by blockade runner from England to the Confederacy). This is the lower right pane. Full original gum, never hinged, small faults in top and bottom margins which show on scan. My scanner bed would not fully accommodate the full pane, thus the left margins is deceiving—there is an 8mm margin at left and the full column of stamps is there. CSA Catalog Value $2,400 just as singles. Nice pane. $1,400.
